Stop private prisons By Mike Corwin | January 25, 2002 | Page 10 SAN ANTONIO, Texas--Activists came together January 12 to show their opposition to the criminal injustice system and those who profit from it. The American Correctional Association (ACA) meeting is a disgusting schmooze-fest featuring representatives of the private prison industry who make money off the more than 2 million people behind bars in the U.S. In protest, activists organized a conference and demonstration. More than 150 people attended the "Break the Chains" conference, which featured workshops on racism, the death penalty, the growing population of women in prison and more. The next day, 150 protesters turned out to the entrance of the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center to send a message to ACA that profiting from human misery and injustice is unacceptable. "They don't have enough prisons to contain the power of a mass movement," Robert King Wilkerson, a former political prisoner, told the conference.
