Midwest antiwar activists meet

June 3, 2009

CINCINNATI--The Midwest Campus Antiwar Network (CAN) conference on May 22-24 at the University of Cincinnati brought together nearly 40 antiwar activists from the region.

Several groups took part, including Students for Justice in Palestine and Food Not Bombs. Workshops throughout the weekend covered a variety of topics, including how the movement for justice in Palestine relates to the antiwar movement, a critical examination of the Iraqi government and the war on civil liberties and free speech at home.

An evening meeting, "The Costs of U.S. Imperialism," sparked a great discussion on the ways that antiwar activists can work more closely with the labor movement. Debates both in and out of the lecture halls were engaging and productive. Nancy, a local CAN member, remarked that as an activist network, "CAN has greater goals than the individual ideals of its diverse membership."

While the event was small, everyone went home more informed and determined to continue the antiwar fight under the new Obama administration.
