Shoe-ing Bush out the door

CONGRESS WOULDN'T impeach Bush, but the people are giving him the boot!

On Monday, January 19--President Bush's last day in office--people will gather at DuPont Circle in Washington, D.C., at 11 a.m. for a rally and march to the White House with their footwear in hand.

Well aware of the message behind Muntader Al-Zaidi's high-profile gesture, this act will make a statement that accomplishes several objectives. First, it is an act of solidarity with those who have suffered in Iraq under the Bush regime. It is also a personal catharsis for people, especially for the Iraq veterans who went to war for a lie. Iraq Veterans like Mathis Chiroux of New York City and Iraq Veterans Against the War board member Ward Reilley will be bringing their infantry boots to hurl, with the names of both Bush and Cheney inscribed on them.

It is also a statement about Bush leaving office with no impeachment proceedings, no criminal investigations and no accountability for his actions at home or abroad. "Congress wouldn't hold Bush and Cheney accountable and are therefore complicit, and we want to let the country know what we think about that," an organizer of the demonstration said.

Lastly, we are sending a message to the world that we share their disdain of the reckless madman who has left a path of destruction from one gulf to another.

All shoes not confiscated by the police will be donated to the Washington, D.C., non-profit, the "Peter Bug Shoe Academy." The organization teaches shoe repair to inner-city youth, then distributes shoes to the needy.
