Hunter College forum on Gaza

February 13, 2009

NEW YORK--Some 80 students attended an event titled "The Truth about Gaza: What We Can Do to Free Palestine" at Hunter College on February 10.

Panelists, who included Raja Abdulhaq of the General Union of Palestinian Students (GUPS), Lichi D'Amelio of the International Socialist Organization (ISO) and Socialist Workers Party mayoral candidate Dan Fein, spoke about the state of the pro-Palestine movement today, the history since the Oslo accords that brought us to this point, and the BDS (boycott divestment sanctions) campaign.

Between each speaker, film clips were shown of scenes of the conditions in Gaza and an interview with an Israeli military resister.

During the audience discussion, people debated the case for a one-state solution, whether we should defend Hamas, whether divestment is the right approach and the role of Islamophobia. People talked about boycotting Sabra hummus sold at the school cafeteria and mobilizing for the March 21 national antiwar demonstration in Washington, D.C.

The meeting was sponsored by the Campus Antiwar Network, GUPS, the ISO, the Palestinian Club-Hunter College and the Young Socialist Alliance.

The palpable excitement and confidence of all the students participating is a good sign for the future of building an international solidarity movement to free Palestine.
